Paradice IRC Golf League 2010 Leaderboard

Creating games is an art form, itself. Playing some games is also an art form. So here is one little place on the internet where we respect the art form of making and playing games, no matter how or where they're played.

2528/10,000 Points so far. Amount to donate to RTH is $252.80.
$250.00 Has already been sent.
$115.90 (1159 pts) from last year was added in by unanimous vote on June 15th, 2010.

We have two referees:
Baphnedia
Shailai
t'sChillin

Here are the golf scoring rules for 2010:

"Hole in One" (a 384 on a d384, only in Round 1) = +5 points (this would immediately end that game)
Winning in 3 rounds = +3 points
Winning in 4 rounds = +2 points
Winning in 5 rounds = +1 point
Winning in 6+ rounds = ZERO
Making it to 1,000 or higher = +1 point
Reaching exactly 1,000 = +n points*
In the event of a tie, both players receive equal points.

*n = The round # you are in, when 1,000 is reached.

- Any one player may play in up to 3 games per day (a 'day' is based GMT time of the game)
- Games may be run by anyone familiar enough with the rules.
- At the conclusion of each game, the ref will PM to me the final scores (after applying handicaps), player names and the number of the final round to me.
- Each day, I will go through the previous day's worth of PMs and update the score boards (so they may be up to 1 day behind).
- If I doubt a game actually happened, I will check with the other players who 'played' without the ref's knowledge, or check IRC logs.
- Your handicap is only applied during the first round of each game. Presently, your handicap is equal to your current score, or your score from 2009, whichever is greater. Thus, with a high enough score, it is possible to have a negative result, starting off the game.
- If your handicap appears in red, then it is equal to your score last year. If it appears in green, then you have surpassed your score from 2009, and your handicap equals your score this year.
- Current score appears to the left, in blue.

Two things, our first games this year, Cyrin took the lead against Bluewolf and I. So, he broke ahead of the pack, as it were.

A question I have for you though; with the handicaps; if your final score in a game is negative (which for now will be highly unlikely), Bluewolf is proposing an additional rule that you lose one point off of your handicap (making it marginally easier in the future to win). I personally don't see a problem adding this to our league rules, and while I am a butt about having the final say, I'd like to hear your thoughts, yes your thoughts on this. What do you think?

I'm going to give it a few months to see how scores work themselves out. Also the idea that someone's handicap is also an unchanging number (red or green) gives more information if the number truly doesn't change. Just being the devil's advocate there.

In other news, I was kicking this idea around yesterday in IRC, and I think it'll work nicely. In 2009, the total number of points earned by the entire league was 1149, and I began to think about how this might be used in a way to benefit others - without having to do tons and tons of logistical work. So, I came up with two ways of making it happen, though I'm not sure what I'd need to do besides myself, on this.

I gave myself two options, one being to pay $1.00 per point I earn in the league this year to a worthwhile charity, or $0.10 per point the league earns (in total). Obviously, not having bottomless pockets I'll have to place a limit on it, and decided to go with the latter; up to $1,000. I challenge the IRC Golf League, as a group and by existing rules to earn 10,000 points this year.

If you would like to participate, you're more than welcome to. Your name will be displayed a hair differently on the leader board for making a commitment, and even more differently than before when that commitment is fulfilled. I'm not sure yet how the nuts and bolts will fit together, since things are a bit more 'fly-by-night' here than say, in Star Fleet International. PM me if you're interested in helping out in some way...

Do you mean you pay $1.00/point out of your own pocket to the charity, or are you saying that you will find a donor to front the money per point? I'm a bit confused with how you worded that. :?

Oh sorry. I'll be paying out of pocket to charity, but instead of me paying $1.00 per point that I get in the league, I'll be paying ten cents for every point the league makes (total), up to 10,000 points or $1,000. The non-profit that I'm doing this for is Return to Honor (the same one that we did the ice cream social last year for). I don't have their permission to use their name in this context, and am only acting as a donor who will hopefully inspire other donors around IRC Golf.

Gotcha! I have been considering working with you and RtH for pulling together an ice-cream day (or weekend) here in the greater Seattle area, perhaps with the help of other clubs within SFI or one of our sister organizations. (Klingons and ice-cream, how can you go wrong with that? Oh... wait, don't answer. )

Oh cool! Tell you what, I'll see what I can do on two ends. What part of the Seattle area were you looking at focusing on? Granted, when I did it for just two stores, it was a lot of work, but well worth it. I'll send you an email about my machinations, and see if I can get any of the Cold Stones local to you introduced to you. Would you want me to focus mostly around Seattle and Everett?

I was thinking from Tacoma to Marysville, and between Bellevue and Bremerton/Kingston would be the overall area, since there are so many of us within the region. But, we can (and have to a degree) taken this off-table to discuss further between you and I, for now.

Thanks, Baph! }|=)

Quick question: Would you like the adventures in IRC Golf be put up on Facebook at all? If so, how detailed do you recommend I get?

hey baphnedia i had a little idea. :P you know how your donating money for the amount of points the league makes this year, what if you add a game to that, well kinda a game, a guessing game.who ever guess's the amount at the end of the year that you will be donating or guess closest to the amount gets there handicap taken down to zero for the coming year.just an idea }|=)

That's a great idea! I might be able to do it for this year (but sadly, I already told a few people who the donation is for)... I think I have a way of possibly doing it right this year... :p

Strategies for the 2010 league:

Has it dawned on you that you tend to get a lot more points when you're golfing against those with similar handicaps? Such as if t'sChillin and I golf, at present we have a 20pt difference in our handicaps. The odds of one of us winning are much higher than if we went up against folks like Howlitzer, who has a handicap of 35 at this time, or Kaisho, whose handicap is 4 right now. Its just food for thought at the moment, right now the number of players available at any one time usually precludes spreading the games out like that. But, if I have more players than I can handle, I'm definitely thinking about splitting it by handicaps, if the players are ok with it.

What do you think?

Also, what do you think will make the game better?
